Acorn Stair Lift Review

Founded in 1992, Acorn has been a leader in straight stair lift design. Though not the least expensive stair lift manufacturer on the market, Acorn's stair lifts are also not the most expensive. Consumers looking for a straight stair lift should consider Acorn, especially if this stair lift meets an individuals' criteria and budget.

About Acorn Lifts:

Acorn makes only one stair lift model called, the Acorn Superglide Model 120, which is designed for straight stairways only. For outdoor staircases this model is also available and is specially sealed for outdoor use.

Indoor/outdoor stair lifts:

Because Acorn designs both indoor and outdoor stair lifts one can take advantage, if desired, of installing (or having installed by Acorn) both an inside and an outside stair lift at the same time at a reduced price. Typically the cost of an outdoor stair lift is more due to the additional weather proofing necessary.

To determine pricing and rail size, one must take the necessary measurements, which for starters, includes counting the actual stairs. If one has 20 steps, for example, that is approximately 20 feet. However, more precise measuring is necessary, and this includes 4 different measurements to determine the railing length and components necessary. Acorn Stairlift Cost:

For Acorn's standard indoor stairlift, this includes 15.5 foot of standard railing an individual would be look to spend from $2,500 to $3,000, (self installed).

Outdoor stairlift with 15.5 foot of standard railing, (self installed) $2800 to $3,200.

Professional installation for a standard stair lift costs around $600. There is a discounted price to install more than one stair lift.

How to Install an Acorn Lift:

There are two ways to install. (1) Acorn sends out a company trained installer, for a fee; or (2) You do it yourself

To self install not much is needed:

  • Power drill
  • Screw driver
  • Wrench

What to Install - A standard sized Acorn Superglide comes with 16-screws which get drilled into the step to mount the railing. The seat and carriage also need to be put together.

Installation Time - For a trained installer this can take from 1.5 to 3 hours. For a handy individual it might take longer, but because the stair lift is shipped with good instructions most people are on par with a professional.
