Stairway lift - Safety on the stairs!

Stairlift manufacturers such as Acorn, Ameriglide, Bruno, Summit and a few others are the brands to consider when looking for a home stairway lift. Designed to take you safely up a flight of interior or exterior stairs, lifts provide safety, mobility as well as convenience, and for many people, provide an opportunity for them to continue living independently at home.

How they work

  • There are 4 stairlift drive types: 1. cable, 2. chain, 3. worm or screw, and 4. rack & pinion drives. Of these four drive types, by far the most popular is the rack and pinion drive. Some have visible gear racks in the middle of the rails, others have hidden gear racks.
  • Rails: Made from either aluminum or steel, the rail is attached directly to your stairs and transports you both up and down the stair way.
  • Power: Stair lifts are either electric or battery operated. If battery operated, your stair lift will have station charging to keep your battery fully charged. People unable to walk down stairs, in the event of an emergency such as a fire or power failure, should buy a battery powered chair lift.
  • Swivel seat: In order to safely access the upper landing or the Stairlift, one must swivel the seat onto the landing. A lever lock release arm releases the lock, allowing the seat to turn.

Where to buy a stairway chair lift

You can buy locally or order a staircase lift online. If you buy a basic straight stairway lift online and would like to have it installed after being delivered, be sure that the store offers installation services.
